What Is Blepharoplasty?

As we age, the delicate skin around our eyes begins to lose elasticity. For some, this natural change causes cosmetic concerns like puffiness or sagging. For others, it can interfere with vision, especially when excess skin begins to droop over the upper eyelid.

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure used to remove excess eyelid skin, fat, and tissue that may be interfering with vision or contributing to a tired or aged appearance.

  • Upper eyelid blepharoplasty can restore side (peripheral) vision by lifting skin that droops into the line of sight.

  • Lower eyelid blepharoplasty is often performed to reduce under-eye bags and create a smoother, more rested look.

Depending on your needs, blepharoplasty may be performed for medical or cosmetic reasons, or both.

Is Eyelid Surgery Right for You?

Here are some things to keep in mind when considering blepharoplasty:

Serves both medical and aesthetic goals

Whether you’re looking for symptom relief or a refreshed appearance, we can tailor your care to your priorities.

Sometimes, loose skin affects vision

If your upper eyelids are sagging into your field of view, it may be time to consider a functional eyelid lift.

Treating Eyelid Conditions at Buffalo Ophthalmology

Ectropion & Entropion Repair

Eyelid malposition is more than a cosmetic concern—it can cause discomfort, irritation, and even damage to the eye if left untreated.

  • Ectropion is when the lower eyelid turns outward, leaving the inner surface exposed and vulnerable to dryness, tearing, and light sensitivity.

  • Entropion is the opposite—the lower lid turns inward, causing the lashes and skin to rub against the eye, which can lead to irritation and redness.

In both cases, eyelid surgery can reposition the lid to reduce symptoms.

Remove Excess Eyelid Skin

One of the most common reasons patients seek eyelid surgery is to reduce the appearance of under-eye “bags.” These can form when the skin and muscles beneath the eyes weaken, allowing fat to protrude and fluid to collect. While this is often a natural part of aging, it can make you appear tired or older than you feel.

Lower eyelid blepharoplasty is a highly effective procedure for reducing under-eye bags. During surgery, excess fat and skin are removed or repositioned to create a smoother, more youthful contour under the eyes.

Preparing for Eyelid Surgery

Before undergoing eyelid surgery, your ophthalmologist will conduct a comprehensive evaluation and review your medical history. You’ll also need to:

  • Provide a list of all medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter drugs, and supplements.

  • Let us know if you take aspirin, blood thinners, or have any bleeding disorders.

  • Discuss any history of eye disease, dry eye, or prior eye surgeries.

Your eye surgeon will go over the procedure, explain the risks and benefits, and answer any questions you may have.

Recovery & Follow-Up Care

At Buffalo Ophthalmology, we make sure your care continues well after the procedure is complete. Our team will provide you with detailed instructions for post-operative care and follow-up appointments to ensure proper healing.

Most patients experience mild swelling or bruising in the first few days, which typically subsides within one to two weeks. We’ll guide you through each step of the recovery process so you feel confident and supported.
